Hockey is the hardest scorebug to keep right. The clock stops and starts all game, penalties run on their own clocks, and the strength changes every time someone goes to the box. The ScoreCastr ice hockey dashboard handles the penalty clocks for you. This guide covers the clock, goals, penalties and the power play, and the rest of the Scoring tab.

Short versionSet the period length, then Start and Stop the clock with the whistle. Score with the GOALS buttons in the Shortcuts card. For a penalty, pick the team and the penalty and click Apply Penalty. Its clock runs with the game clock and the power play shows by itself.

Set up the match

Create the match: pick Ice Hockey, name both teams and set their four-character scorebug names. See Create your first match. Open it with Control Dashboard and stay on the Scoring tab.

The period length is set on the dashboard, not at setup. A new match starts with 20-minute periods.

Period and clock

In the SCORING CONTROLS card:

  • PERIOD: Next steps from the 1st to the 2nd and 3rd period, then OT, then SO (shootout). Prev goes back. Set FINAL ends the game and stops the clock.
  • GAME CLOCK: choose Professional (20 min) or High School (15 min). Changing it resets and stops the clock. Then use Start and Stop, Reset, and +1m, -1m, +10s and -10s to match the rink clock. Hide Clock takes it off the scorebug.

If the clock is stopped when you click Next, it loads a full period. The clock stops by itself at 0:00.

Goals

The best way to score is the GOALS section of the SHORTCUTS card. Click the scoring team's button and ScoreCastr:

  • adds the goal to the current period
  • counts it in the team's goals, and as a power-play goal if that team is on the power play
  • plays the GOAL takeover on the scorebug

Each team panel in SCORING CONTROLS also has +1 and -1, and small plus and minus buttons for each period (P1, P2, P3, OT, SO). Use those to fix a score. The +1 plays the GOAL animation but doesn't count the goal in the stats.

ScoreCastr doesn't record goal scorers or assists.

Penalties and the power play

The PENALTIES & POWER PLAY card comes with the Starter plan.

  1. Under SELECT TEAM, click the team that took the penalty.
  2. Under SELECT PENALTY, pick from 21 types, grouped as Minor (2 min), Double-Minor (4 min), Major (5 min) and Misconduct.
  3. Click Apply Penalty.

ScoreCastr adds the penalty minutes, starts the penalty clock and puts the other team on the power play. The status line at the top shows the strength, such as 5-on-4, and the scorebug shows the power play with its time left.

How the penalty clocks work:

  • They run with the game clock. Stop the game clock and they stop too, and they carry over into the next period.
  • SERVING PENALTIES lists each team's penalties with their time. A team can have 2 in the box. A third waits under QUEUED (Waiting) and starts when a spot opens.
  • When a penalty runs out, it drops off and the next queued one starts.
  • -10s and +10s on a penalty adjust its time. That penalty then stops following the game clock (it's marked (M)).
  • X removes a penalty.
Watch outA power-play goal doesn't end a minor penalty on its own. After a power-play goal, click X on the penalty that should come off.

Misconduct and Game Misconduct add penalty minutes but don't cause a power play.

Penalty Clock Mode sets how new penalties run: Auto (with the game clock) or Manual.

Empty net and delayed penalty

Each team panel has two toggles:

  • Empty Net: shows the empty net on the scorebug while the goalie is pulled. It reads Empty Net Active while it's on. Click it again when the goalie comes back.
  • Delayed Penalty: shows a delayed penalty while the referee's arm is up. Turn it off when play stops, then apply the penalty.

Each team also has Use Timeout and Add Timeout, with one timeout per team.

Shots, stats and lines

The SHORTCUTS card has quick +1 buttons for SHOTS, SHOTS ON GOAL and SAVES.

TEAM STATISTICS (Starter) has plus and minus buttons for Shots, SOG, Saves, Hits, Blocks, FO Won, FO Total, Giveaways, Takeaways, PIM and PP, with Save %, FO % and PP % worked out for you. The eye on a row shows that stat on the scorebug.

SUBSTITUTIONS / LINES shows each team's Skaters (5), Goalie and Bench by jersey number. Click Load Rosters from Teams to fill it from your saved teams, then pick a player on the ice and one on the bench and click Swap Players. There are no saved line combinations; you swap players one at a time.

Apex and Primetime extras

On Apex or Primetime (Starter plan), the Shortcuts card adds a VISIBILITY section:

  • SHOW SHOTS ON GOAL puts each team's shots on goal under its score. On Classic, shots on goal only show through the stat eye button.
  • SHOW TITLE turns the scorebug's title bar on and off.

The Period Stats graphic also gets a Show Comparison Bars switch.

Graphics and Stream Deck

On Starter, hockey adds Away Starters and Home Starters (six players) and Period Stats to the shared graphics under Overlays, then Customization.

Ice hockey codes run from 2700 to 2752. Codes need Listening Mode (Starter plan).

Code Action
2705 / 2706 Start / Stop Clock
2713 / 2715 Away / Home Goal +1
2723 / 2724 Toggle Away / Home Empty Net
2725 / 2726 Toggle Away / Home Delayed Penalty
2727 / 2729 Away / Home Shots +1
2751 Toggle Final

The goal codes change the score only, with no animation. The penalty codes (2717 to 2720) change penalty minutes only; they don't start a penalty clock, so apply penalties on the dashboard. See Set up a Stream Deck for the ready-made hockey profile.
