Run a softball game, including the FLEX spot

Softball uses the same pitch-by-pitch dashboard as baseball, set for seven innings. On Apex and Primetime, the lineup gets a 10th spot for the FLEX.

If you've scored baseball in ScoreCastr, you already know the softball dashboard: it's the same controls, set up for a seven-inning game. This guide covers what's different for softball, the FLEX spot in the lineup, and a quick tour of the controls for anyone new.

Short versionCreate the match with Softball as the sport and score it exactly like baseball: +Ball, +Strike, Foul Ball and +Out for every pitch. The game is seven innings. On Apex or Primetime, type the FLEX into the 10th row of the Starters graphic.

Create a softball match

On the Select Sport screen, pick Softball, not Baseball. Set up both teams as usual (see Create your first match). Open the match from your list with Control Dashboard. The Scoring tab is headed SOFTBALL MATCH CONTROLS.

What's different from baseball

Baseball Softball
Game length 9 innings 7 innings
Line score columns 9, plus extras 7, plus extras
Final after extras (Apex, Primetime) FINAL/10 FINAL/8
Lineup on Apex and Primetime 9 spots 9 spots plus a FLEX
Roster positions in My Teams Includes Designated Hitter and Closer Includes Designated Player and Flex Player

Everything else works the same: the count, outs, base runners, the hit buttons, the 10 batter results, pitch counts and the graphics. The full walk-through of every control is in Run a baseball game pitch by pitch.

The controls in brief

  • SCORING CONTROLS: the INNING box with TOP and BOT, Set FINAL, and the count: +Ball, +Strike, +Out, -Ball, -Strike, -Out and Foul Ball. Ball four walks the batter, strike three is a strikeout and an out, and the third out flips the half-inning and clears the bases.
  • BASE RUNNERS: tap a base on the diamond or use Runner on 1st, Runner on 2nd and Runner on 3rd. Runs have their own + and - for each team.
  • SHORTCUTS: Single, Double, Triple and Home Run move the runners and score the runs, plus Reset Count, Clear Bases and Out.
  • BATTING (Starter): the batter for each team and the ten result buttons, K, 1B, 2B, 3B, HR, ER, SAC, FC, GRND and FLY, with Undo Last Stat.
  • TEAM STATS (Starter): runs, hits and errors, with Errors buttons.
  • PITCHING (Starter): each team's pitcher and their pitch counts. See Baseball and softball pitcher stats. In softball, the Select Pitcher list shows roster players with the position Pitcher or Relief Pitcher.
  • RESET CONTROLS: Reset All Stats, Reset Inning and Reset Count & Outs.
Watch outA hit from the Shortcuts card and a batter result like 1B both add a team hit. Use one or the other for each hit, or the hit counts twice.

Extra innings

A softball game doesn't stop at seven. If it's tied, keep scoring: the third out of the bottom of the seventh moves to the eighth. The line score adds a column for each extra inning. When the game ends, press Set FINAL.

The FLEX spot

In softball, the FLEX plays in the field but doesn't bat; a designated player bats in their place. On the Apex and Primetime templates, the Starters graphic has room for that 10th player.

  1. On the Overlays tab, open Customization, then Away Starters (or Home Starters).
  2. Fill in Player 1 to Player 9 in batting order, each with Number, Name and Position.
  3. Below them is a 10th row, FLEX (does not bat). Type the FLEX's number, name and position.

The FLEX row only appears when the match uses Apex or Primetime. On Classic the lineup has nine spots.

On the graphic, the FLEX sits after the batting order with a FLEX tag instead of a number in the order. Apex and Primetime mark the batter at the plate with AT BAT, and the FLEX is never marked, because the FLEX never bats. Leave the row empty if your team isn't using a FLEX, and the graphic shows the nine batters only.

TipThe defense graphic still has nine fielding spots, P through RF. Put the FLEX in the position they play there. See Defense on the diamond.

Graphics for softball

Under Customization (Starter), softball has the same graphics as baseball: Away Starters, Home Starters, Away Defense, Home Defense and Game Stats, plus the usual scorebug, scoreboard, title card, lower thirds and the rest. The Game Stats graphic is called that, rather than Halftime Stats, because softball has no halftime.

On Apex and Primetime, the Shortcuts card adds the STRIKEOUT, DOUBLE PLAY and PITCHING CHANGE flags and SHOW LINE SCORE, and the home run takeover reads GRAND SLAM! with the bases loaded. These flags only play the graphic; they don't change the count or stats.

Stream Deck codes

Softball shares the 2400 codes with baseball, and the ready-made baseball profile works for softball too. For example, 2400 adds a ball, 2402 a strike, 2407 is a foul ball, 2404 an out and 2459 toggles FINAL. The inning codes 2412 to 2420 jump straight to innings 1 to 9. Set up Listening Mode and the profile with Set up a Stream Deck.
