Run a soccer penalty shootout

Show the shootout bar, mark every kick as a make or a miss, and keep going into sudden death on Apex and Primetime.

A shootout is the most tense few minutes of a soccer broadcast, and viewers want to see every kick as it happens. ScoreCastr shows it as a bar under the scorebug, with a dot for each kick. This guide covers starting the shootout, recording kicks, going into sudden death and clearing it afterwards.

Short versionIn the PENALTY KICKS card, click Penalty Kicks In, then click Make or Miss on each Kick row as the kicks are taken. On Apex or Primetime, Add Kick (Sudden Death) adds another round once all five are taken. Do it before Full Time.

Before you start

Watch outClicking Complete 2nd half (or choosing Full Time) ends the match and locks the shootout buttons. When the game goes to penalties, leave the period on 2nd half, run the whole shootout, then complete the half.

The shootout works on every plan and every template. Sudden death past five kicks needs Apex or Primetime, which come with the Starter plan.

Show the shootout bar

The PENALTY KICKS card is at the bottom of the soccer Scoring tab.

  1. Click Penalty Kicks In. The bar drops under the scorebug and the kick buttons unlock.
  2. Click Penalty Kicks Out to hide the bar. Your kicks are kept.

Green dots are makes, red dots are misses and grey dots are kicks not yet taken.

The kick buttons stay locked until you click Penalty Kicks In. If you reload the dashboard, the buttons lock again. Click Penalty Kicks In once more and carry on; the kicks you recorded are still there.

Record each kick

Each team has a column (Away Team and Home Team) with a row per kick, Kick 1 to Kick 5.

  1. When a kick is taken, click Make or Miss on the next row for that team.
  2. If you clicked the wrong one, click the other button on the same row. It switches.

If the bar is hidden when you record a kick, it shows for a few seconds and then hides again.

ScoreCastr doesn't decide the winner or change the final score. The scorebug shows the kicks, and you read the result from them. Show it on a graphic of your own if you want a winner card, such as a lower third.

How the bar looks on each template

Template What the bar shows
Classic Each team's name and a dot per kick
Apex Short names, five dots each, and each team's goals in bold. The newest kick is highlighted
Primetime A PENALTIES label, five dots each, and each team's goals

Sudden death

On Apex and Primetime, a shootout can go past five kicks each, up to 15.

  1. Record all five kicks for both teams.
  2. When every kick is filled in and the teams have the same number, Add Kick (Sudden Death) appears under the columns.
  3. Click it to add one more round for both teams. Record the two kicks, and click it again if it's still level.

Past round five, the bar shows SUDDEN DEATH. It still shows five dots per team, for the five most recent rounds, while the goal totals count every kick.

Classic doesn't have Add Kick (Sudden Death). If you switch a match with sudden-death rounds to Classic, the bar shows every kick as a dot with no sudden-death label.

Clear the shootout

  • Clear All in a team's column empties that team's kicks.
  • Reset All Penalty Kicks empties both teams and goes back to five kicks each.
  • Reset Match on the Game Actions tab clears the shootout along with everything else.

The kicks also appear in the match's PDF box score, from Download Box Score in the sidebar.

Stream Deck codes

Code Action
2133 Toggle Penalty Shootout (same as In and Out)
2134 Away Penalty +1
2135 Home Penalty +1

2134 and 2135 mark the team's next empty kick as a make. They only work with the shootout in, and there's no code for a miss, so record misses on the dashboard. Codes need Listening Mode (Starter plan). See Set up a Stream Deck.
